YPSILANTI — In observance of Transgender Day of Visibility on March 31, Eastern Michigan University’s Career Closet is partnering with the LGBT Resource Center and Swoop’s Food Pantry to host the “Trans Day of Visibility Clothing Closet.” The event is from noon to 5 p.m. at the Student Center, 900 Oakwood St., and encourages transgender and gender non-conforming students to browse professional attire. The event is free to enter and open to all.

“As a member of the transgender community, I find it's extremely important to provide resources and community to other transgender people,” said Melbourne Buskirk, EMU senior who conceptualized the event. “We hope to have a little bit of everything for the students to choose from.”

EMU’s Career Closet provides students and alumni with free access to professional attire and accessories needed for job interviews and internships, among others. By hosting the event at the Career Closet, Buskirk hopes students who may feel apprehensive about browsing clothing that doesn’t align with their gender at birth feel more comfortable using the resource. Additional donated clothing items from Swoop’s Food Pantry will also be available.

Ultimately, Buskirk aims to help the LGBTQ+ community on campus feel seen. “I hope to show the whole community on campus that we do have transgender and gender diverse students here, and they deserve to be here as much as anyone else.”
